The best way to future proof a house against rising fuel costs is to reduce the need for heating.
A Passive House is designed to require no space heating. This is achieved by super insulation and super air tightness. It is essential to incorporate Heat Recovery Ventilation to ensure satisfactory air quality. Other renewable systems such as solar water heating, wood burning cookers and stoves, photovoltaic systems etc. can be added at the build stage (solar water heating is cost effective now)or at a later date when they become more financially viable (Solar PV is expensive at the moment but prices are falling). We can advise architects, builders and self-builders on all aspects of Passive design.
